Our intern Dan is in his last week of his internship and since he really enjoys dumplings, I thought we’d try one of the best dumpling deals we have on Postabon. The Deal: Like dumplings? Prosperity Dumplings in Chinatown offers 5 dumplings for $1, according to Postabon member Yaelleah. Is It Truly A Deal?: When you consider that an appetizer portion of about 7 dumplings costs $4.50 at the cheapest Chinese restaurant, this deal at Prosperity Dumplings is truly a great value. Pros: You can choose what kind of dumplings you’d like to get for $1. Get 10 boiled Cons: There wasn’t anything wrong with this deal. My only complaint was I wish you got soy sauce packets so you can put the sauce on at home. I’d rather though dump the soy sauce out of the restaurant’s containers on to my to-go food though than have them raise the prices! Keep in mind our sauce leaked out of the styrofoam containers into the plastic bag, so make sure you don’t get anything on you. Our 2 Cents: If you like dumplings, you must put Prosperity Dumplings on your to-do list. Since this is such a good deal, chances are you’ll act like us and over-order, but $2 worth of dumplings is more than enough. Most likely you’ll be torn between boiled or pan-friend, but go with the pan-friend. Since Prosperity Dumplings is rather small, you’ll want to take it back to your apartment or office and the pan-fried dumplings held up much better and were much more delicious. pork and chive dumplings for $2, or 5 pan-fried pork and chive dumplings for $1. You can also get 10 Chinese vegetable and pork boiled dumplings for $2 as well. If you change your mind and don’t feel like dumplings, don’t worry - everything on the menu is cheap!
Like most young professionals, I enjoy going out for (cheap) drinks on Thursday night after work. More often than not though, due to time and wallet constraints, I often skip supper for a liquid dinner and end up having a miserable Friday morning.
That’s why I’m a proud supporter of bars that provide free food with drinks. Whether it’s a hot dog or some tater tots, chances are that by consuming these snacks, I won’t wake up at 3am on my couch then with a piece of late-night pizza in hand.
Here’s some of our favorite spots if you are looking for a free meal tonight when drinking:
Trash Bar: This Williamsburg hangout offers a great drinking AND free food deal. Every day from 8-9 pm, enjoy all you can drink PBR, well drinks and your elementary school cafeteria favorite, tater tots. Spend $6 to take advantage of this deal Sunday - Thursday, and $7 on Friday and Saturday. (256 Grand St, between Roebling and Driggs).
Port 41: Who doesn’t like a free hot dog? According to Postabon member
jbombm, every time you order a drink at Port 41, you’ll get a free dog. Not much of a meat eater? Then snack on free popcorn. While your there, enjoy darts and pool. (355 W. 41st St, between 8th and 9th).
Rudy’s: If Port 41 isn’t your scene but you are still craving a hot dog real bad, head down the street to Rudy’s. User lolograham tells us they advertise “free hot dogs - always!” so get fed while sipping on some pops. Pitchers start at just $7. (627 9th Ave between 44th and 45th).
Fontana’s: Test your trivia knowledge at Fontana’s on the Lower East Side every Thursday night from 7-9pm, according to Postabon member smalley. While showing off to your friends that you totally know who wrote the Babysitter’s Club (Ann M. Martin), snack on free pizza and sip on $3 beers until 8pm. (105 Eldridge St, between Broome and Grand).
Have any other favorite drink and free food deals? Add them to Postabon! Now as my colleague Wells would say, let’s party.
The weekend is finally here. Rarely is my weekend completely void of birthday parties, visitors or weekend getaway plans, but when my Saturday and Sunday are a blank slate, I love taking advantage of different events that NYC has to offer.
If you are looking for something fun to do this weekend, check out these specials:
Get fit: According to community member dreso, there is free yoga out
in Williamsburg this weekend. All day on Saturday, Bikram Yoga Williamsburg will offer free classes. Come down for a class at 10 am, noon, 2 pm, 4 pm, 6 pm and 8 pm and spend nothing! As a former Williamsburg resident, just a heads up to Manhattan folks that Williamsburg is not as far away as you think. This yoga studio is off the first stop in Brooklyn - or a 7 minute ride from Union Square. (108 North 7th St, between Berry and Wythe).
Indulge: Let’s face it, the only steak dinners I get are on special occasions, like my birthday (or that one time when I bet my roommate a steak dinner I could keep our apartment clean for a month and won). If you are celebrating something special this weekend or want a great steak dinner, check out Maloney & Porcelli’s Weekend Wine Dinner. Receive an appetizer, entrée and dessert for $75 – but wait, there’s more. Enjoy unlimited pours of the featured wines of the night. So basically, an open bar and steak? Sign me up! This deal is available Fridays and Saturdays after 8 pm and Sundays after 5 pm. (37 E. 50th between Park and Madison).
Sight-See: Take in the Lower East Side this weekend at one of the first street fairs of the season. According to community member sparky, the Hester Street Fair is open from 10 am – 6 pm Saturday and Sunday. Snow cones, Luke’s Lobster and hot pretzel sandwiches are just some of the highlights of this street fair. The fair will take place at Hester and Essex Street. While there are an abundance of street fairs in the warmer months, this looks like it’ll be a little bit different than those with the typical sausage and peppers (not like there’s anything wrong with that). (Hester St at Essex St).
