Chances are at some point this summer, mom and dad will come to town and you’ll be stuck trying to figure out how to entertain them for 10 hours. If your mom and dad appreciate theater and the arts, you may want to try this itinerary (which for the record, has been approved by parents of a Postabon employee).
If your parents are dying to see a show and spring coming into the city on you last minute, consider going to TKTS to pick up discounted show tickets. The last thing you’ll want to do is wait in the Times Square TKTS line with mom and dad in the summertime heat, so consider swinging by the Brooklyn or South Street Seaport TKTS the day before their arrival so you can buy next-day matinee tickets. So if mom and dad are arriving Saturday, head to the Seaport on Friday so you’ll have tickets to a mid-afternoon performance. If you need suggestions for a parent-friendly show, consider Next to Normal, In the Heights or anything Disney.
To kick off mom and dad’s visit, head to brunch on Saturday morning. If you want your parents to not miss your afternoon show, it may be best to skip an all-you-can-drink brunch and opt for a brunch that includes just one cocktail. PS 450 is a great option, and for $12, you can get an entree and coffee or tea, with the choice of a bellini, mimosa, bloody mary or orange juice (deal courtesy of caryndonohue). Other brunch options are also available on Postabon.
As you walk to the show, you may want to consider stopping in Bryant Park to catch up and enjoy the weather if you have time before the show. Then, head up to Times Square for your mid-afternoon performance.
After the show, bring mom and dad up to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. If it’s nice, consider walking up by the park, or head uptown on the subway and cut through Central Park. Offer to pay for mom and dad at the Met - little do they know you’ll be able to pay whatever you want since the Met offers suggested admission according to Postabon member Knox.
If your parents are still looking to do more sight-seeing after the Met, head to the Guggenheim. On Saturdays from 5:45 - 7:45 pm, you can pay whatever you want for admission, says Postabon member edog. This is perfect if you want to do a quick walk-around with mom and pops, and you won’t feel bad if you decide to leave early to head over to dinner.
Speaking of dinner, there are plenty of restaurants to choose from in New York, so we’ll leave that up to you. However, if your parents are big wine drinkers and love a good steak, you may want to suggest Maloney & Porcelli. For $75, you can enjoy three courses and unlimited wine. On Fridays and Saturdays, this special starts at 8pm.
